Funerals at St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

The staff of St. Mary/St. Joseph Catholic Community are here to help you in planning a funeral. These are the steps to take:

  1. Contact the Church Secretary regarding your needs: Gail Sowell,, 936-894-2223

  2.  Meet with or speak to Father Ed about the date and time of the funeral, and to address any issues that may exist regarding either the funeral itself or the burial site. Gail will arrange the date and time of this meeting.

  3. Communicate with the Funeral Coordinator, Laveta Malek, regarding your choice of music, and to let her know how many people you expect will be attending; also, let her know whether you would like to have a luncheon served after the service by St. Mary’s or St. Joseph’s Altar Society.

  4. If appropriate, meet with Ann Schwartz regarding purchase of a burial site at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The Funeral Coordinator and/or Director of Music will be happy to choose any or all of the music, if you so desire. Please assist in that process by indicating if you would like more traditional songs and/or contemporary songs. A printed worship and music aid will be provided by the Church for the service.

The use of secular music (music not written for use in sacred liturgy) is not permitted. All music must be suited for the Mass — the highest form of prayer the church offers. If you have any questions, the Funeral Coordinator, Laveta Malek, will be most happy to help you with your selections. She can be reached through the Church office (936-894-2223) or at home (936-894-2465).

Special Note: In keeping with musical and liturgical guidelines set by the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, the usage of pre-recorded tapes or CDs is not permitted whether for music during the Mass, or to accompany any vocalist.
